Rionna Morgan and the Murder We Write Blog Tour

Rionna Morgan and Love's Justice

The setting in Love’s Justice acts as a catalyst to show what Sarah, the heroine, does not know. Sarah is a profiler. She’s very perceptive when it comes to people and situations. I wanted to put her in situations where she would not be comfortable—take her out of her element—force her to face her weaknesses.

I’ve included an excerpt from Love’s Justice showing Sarah entering the prison cell where her mother died while on an undercover assignment decades before.

Standing outside cell number C17 was the hardest thing Sarah had ever done. Taking a step into the cell where her mother had died was the next.

Walking across the dimly lit room, Sarah could feel the coldness of the floor, of the place, seep up into her, chilling her. It seemed to take an eternity to reach the steel bunk where her mother had slept.

Her legs moved at a creeping pace. Her normally quick eyes, which would’ve normally darted about, gathering facts, paused with shock. Under her feet, the concrete floor was littered with stains. Some were small, probably spit or droplets of old dried blood. There were a few that were large, as if there had been a pool of liquid. Sarah wondered what could have made those blots. Spilled coffee? Leaky pipe? Blood? Was it her mother’s?

As Sarah slumped down on the edge of the mattress, her nose filled with the musty, old scent of it. Her hands felt its thinness through her gloves and the wadded, cotton texture beneath the coarse fabric. Her eyes moved around the empty cell, trying to imagine her mother sitting here, sleeping here, living here day after day, for weeks on end.

Her mom had sat at that tiny table writing her letters, telling her how proud she was to have a daughter as brave and fast as hers was. The letters always sounded as if she’d been on vacation or something lighthearted to match her tone. But no. She’d been here. Here in this hell of a place, where a fire had taken her life.

The idea of it overpowered Sarah’s senses. As she pulled in her next breath, she could smell the choking, thick smoke that would have filled the cell as the fire burned. She could almost hear her mother’s screaming as the flames ate at her clothing and seared her skin.

Sarah couldn’t take it anymore. She had to get out.

Blurb:
Sarah Johnson is a profiler in Portland, Oregon. She thinks she has successfully moved beyond the pain of her mother’s death 15 years ago.  Her mother, a Pulitzer Prize winning writer, died in an Alabama women’s prison while on an undercover assignment.  However, when Justin Breslow shows up at her office claiming to be an investigative reporter from Dallas wanting to do a feature on her mother, Sarah realizes the pain has just been dormant.  She agrees to work with Justin; she’s always wanted to retrace her mother’s final days, but she has no intention of sharing family secrets with a perfect stranger.

Sarah and Justin unravel a plot more complex and sinister than they expected.  They pursue a trail of deceit and corruption to a women’s prison in Alabama, a centuries old hotel in Georgia and a family ranch in Texas. Nothing is simple or as it seems. Along the way, Sarah tries not to fall for Justin’s Southern charm, and Justin fights to resist Sarah’s beauty and sharp intellect.

This unlikely duo will find more than they ever hoped to—in the prison, in their own backyards, and in each other’s arms.  Whether they survive to enjoy their discoveries is the final mystery.
